Windy Mundy Farm.
Peacefully situated within the extensive grounds of the Pitchford Estate, this property offers superb holiday accommodation. Windy Mundy Farm has recently been converted from an 18th century threshing barn and deer shelter and is located on an old deer park at the centre of the Estate. Built on top of a south-facing hill overlooking Row Brook, and part of a working arable farm, it is surrounded by fields of wheat and barley and has spectacular, far-reaching views towards the Shropshire hills. Enclosed by a long stone wall, the farm has its own courtyard garden with a patio and barbecue.
Within 6 miles of Windy Mundy Farm is historic Shrewsbury with its fascinating architecture, castle, museums, shops and wealth of traditional inns and restaurants. Easily accessible is popular Church Stretton, and Shropshire's finest town Ludlow, framed by the gentle Clee Hill, with its impressive castle, magnificent church, many half-timbered buildings and Georgian red-brick houses. Bridgnorth has what is reputed to be the steepest cliff railway in Britain and superb cliff-top walks overlooking the River Severn below. From here, during Summer, the Severn Valleys Railway's steam train chugs the scenic 16-mile route to Kidderminster. Attingham Park (NT), Benthall Hall (NT), Ironbridge Gorge and the old market town of Much Wenlock (with its medieval priory) are all within easy driving distance. Riding, sailing, fishing, golf, pubs and restaurants locally.
Windy Mundy Farm History
Windy Mundy Farm sits within the old Pitchford Park which as the name suggests was originally the parkland surrounding Pitchford Hall. In 1638 Lord Newport gave deer from High Ercall Park to stock Francis Ottley's new park at Pitchford. 'A map of the Lordship of Pitchford', which is now held in the Pitchford Hall collection at the National Library of Wales, depicts the parkland as it was after 1726, and most probably around 1750. A Grass Walk leads from Pitchford Hall, through a deer park to a round 'Deer House' which is no longer visible but must have been a couple of hundred meters from Windy Mundy Farm.
The next mention of Pitchford Park is in an agreement dated January 24th 1766 between Thomas Ottley of Pitchford Hall and Mr John Rogers. Ottley agreed to let Pitchford Park for the term of one year for the sum of one hundred and five pounds. However, he made it quite clear within the agreement that Rogers was not allowed to take deer from the Park. Interestingly, neither Windy Mundy Farm (barn) nor the actual Pitchford Park Farmhouse were mentioned in the agreement.
In a tenancy agreement dated July 22nd 1774, Windy Mundy Farmhouse appears to get its first mention as the "Upper Barn & Hold" on the Pitchford Park Farm.
In 1799 in a survey of the fields on the Pitchford Park farm there is now a field called 'Barn Field' (formerly Barn Piece) which adjoins Upper Lodge Piece and seemed to dissect the previous Sheep Piece Field. Fortunately, this tallies with its position to the 1844 Pitchford Field Names map. It is not, however, before 1844 that Windy Mundy Farm can be first located on a map still in existence. After 13 generations of Ottleys the house passed to the Jenkinson family in 1807. It is thanks to this tumultuous change that 'A Survey of Estates in the Parishes of Pitchford - Belonging to Hon Charles Cecil Cope Jenkinson' (3rd Earl of Liverpool) was completed in 1807. Consequently, the barn is clearly marked on the accompanying estate map with the hand-written comments "Barn needs new covering". On the basis that Windy Mundy Farm was built between 1766 and 1774 we can assume that after over a quarter of a century of wear and tear the barn was in the need of a little repair by 1807.
